A collage of 12 portraits taken by photographer Jordon Hon to accompany the interviews Eric Rice did with a variety of Edmontonians about their experiences with the housing system for Housing Complex, a Taproot Edmonton project.
Taproot Edmonton has launched Housing Complex, a multi-part project exploring what works, what doesn't, and what can be done to improve Edmonton's housing system.
A big part of the project is a series of 12 interviews conducted by writer and ECOHH member Eric Rice with Edmontonians about their place in the housing ecosystem. Some have suffered in the system. Some have benefited from it. Some have had to overcome significant challenges to have decent housing. The idea is to see where people across a broad spectrum are coming from, so we can begin to build a common understanding of the complexity and take the necessary steps toward systemic change. Eric’s interviews are accompanied by portraits taken by photographer Jordon Hon.
This work was made possible by funding obtained from the Alberta Real Estate Foundation by the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness (ECOHH). Members of ECOHH also acted as advisors on the project and assisted in locating some of the interviewees.
Here are the people who shared their stories (each name links to their vignette):
Karen Unland explains more about why and how the series came about on Taproot’s blog.
The work done by Eric and Jordon will be accompanied by a series of explanatory articles about aspects of Edmonton’s housing system, pursued by Taproot’s reporters and funded by Taproot members and sponsors. That series will culminate in a look at what Edmonton’s city council can do about the problems and what voters should be asking candidates heading into the October 2025 municipal election.
Stay tuned for details on a Housing Complex event to be held during National Housing Month in November, and for release information about the explanatory articles published by Taproot.
